We're on our way home!

Today is our last day of the trip. Yesterday, we went to the Smithsonian Museums. The kids had a chance to visit several of the many buildings that are there. Most kids went to the Air & Space museum and the Natual History museum. Some also went to the American History museum and Art museum. Last night the group went to Smokey Glen farm. Smokey Glen is an outdoor sports/recreation facility and restaurant. Kids played basketball, soccer, mini-golf, etc.

We had our first "injury" last night. Amy Thibo re-injured her knee playing vollyball and we had to take her to the emergency room. She is fine. However, we were up until 2:00 AM getting her to see a doctor... ACK!

Today we will be touring the monuments and Ford's Theater. Then we will leave for home late tonight. Hopefully everything will be on schedule. I will attempt to update the website as we near home so that you know what time to pick up your child. I may not be able to do this from the road, so if this web page is not updated by 8:30 AM tomorrow morning, then please call my office: 989-662-4481 ext. 6186. I will leave a message on my voicemail there telling you when we plan to be back. See you soon!

Bands perform, have fun.

On Saturday, The HS Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band all performed in the Festivals of Music competition. At this festival, bands earn both a rating and a placement. The rating is based on a national standard and the placement is based on a comparison to the other bands in their class at this site. All three bands played VERY well and I (Mr. H) was VERY proud of their performances!

Here are the results:

bandratingplacement
Concert BandExcellent2nd place, class AA CB
Symphonic BandExcellent2nd place, class A CB
Jazz BandExcellent2nd place, class AA JB

**a rating of "excellent" would be comparable to a "I" rating at our State Festival.

Special recognition was also given to sections in the Jazz Band (JB) competition: The Western High School Jazz Band earned Best Trombone Section, Best Saxophone Section, and Best Rhythm Section.

Awards were distributed at a special Ceremony in Busch Gardens on Sunday Morning. The students then spent the rest of the day in the Busch Gardens Theme Park and had a great time.

We're Here!

Well, we survived the long bus trip and lived to perform! We left WHS at 4:00 AM and arrived at our hotel in VA Beach at 10:00 PM. We stopped approximately every three hours.

We performed on Saturday morning and afternoon. All three bands did VERY well and I am very proud of their hard work and good attitudes. We don't know yet our scores and how we compare to the other bands, but the judges we worked with were very complimentary.

Tonight we are headed off to our Dinner/Dance cruise and the kids are very excited! Tomorrow, we go to Busch Gardens and then drive to Washington DC.

I'll try to post again as we continue our journey. Check back for more updates! -Mr. H
